I had a dream the other night that Buffy got her period while at her dad's house and her STEPMOTHER took care of her, instead of me.

I flipped out.

When she woke up, I made her promise that if that happened, she would tell dad she wanted to come home so *I* could take care of her.

Buffy has been waiting to get her period since she was about six years old. She cannot wait, she even practices with little pads sometimes. So I want to make the actual event special for her.

How many of us had "special" days when our period started? I remember changing my panties over and over for the first couple hours, until finally calling my mom, red faced, and asking her for help. For some reason I was never comfortable talking to my mom about that kind of stuff. Buffy is different, she's quite open about it.

And really, shouldn't we be celebrating our first period? It does mark our becoming a woman, and so many other cultures hold special events that mark such an occassion.

I think it was reading The Red Tent that made me really think about what I could do so that Buffy's memory of starting her period will always be a good one. That is an awesome, incredible book that makes you feel wonderful about your body and being a woman.

I always thought I would take her to dinner the day she started, because I knew she'd want to celebrate. I may possibly even take the day off work and let her stay home from school for one day while we celebrate being women together. But I also really really want to get her a little gold bracelet, a nice one she can keep forever, as a symbol of the day.

Now that we're poor again I've been freaking out that I won't be able to afford one for her, but I think my mom can help me with that part.

Anyway, if she starts her period while at her dad's house, all my plans for her will be blown. But she promised me would come right home if that happened. "Besides," she told me, "If I start my period at dad's, he'd probably take me to the hospital," and she laughed.

I love my daughter.

Speaking of kids, Spike just got his report card. STRAIGHT A's!!!!!!

Now that deserves something special too. And this year in August he turns 13. I'm thinking of having a special party for him this year, you know, we can celebrate him "becoming a man", not in *that* way, just the growing up way, heh.

Which reminds me, he spends so much time on the computer talking to his friends I finally signed him up for a blog and showed him how to use it. So I peeked at it the next day and you know what I see?

"hi pplz whats up? so hi 2 chealsi if ur readin this and hi 2 all u other ppl 2..." etc., etc...

What a way to give your mother a stroke. MY CHILD is writing like this??????

Good thing he brought that report card home...

Oh, and guess what, I got my taxes done EARLY this year!!!! Usually I do them myself, on April 15, and it is a tradition in this house that the kids will be silent that day ("because if mommy doesn't get this finished then mommy is going to JAIL!") and then they pack up their pillows and baggies of cocopuffs, and we get into the car at 11pm to drive across town to the post office that's open until midnight.

This year I had extra paperwork because of various loans and 401K deals after the house fire. So I didn't want to do them myself, but I was procrastinating again. Finally yesterday I saw an ad in the paper for a CPA nearby. I called up, and got a quote of $350!!!! So I called a tax service place and got a low quote of $180 which I had heard was about the going rate. But at the last second I saw one more place that was right by my house.

I called up the lady, she had an appointment for 7pm, and she only charges... $35. That's right, thirty five dollars.

It took 30 minutes from the time I arrived until I left with the papers in my hand.

And I get a total of $1500 refunded.

I am so happy.
