I was debating whether I should work for a scholarship this semester. You only have about 2 weeks notice to turn papers in and there's not a lot of variety in scholarships available. Creative Writing and Medieval Studies are not my thing, so that lets out around 90% of them. But there is one different one, the James O. Wood award, for the best essay, reading, scene representation, musical presentation, costume, painting, sculpture, or other appropriate project related to any of Shakespeare's dramatic works. I've been working on an essay, but it's difficult to come up with something regarding Shakespeare that hasn't been studied already, so I debated making a costume. Like, a simple toga dress for Queen Hippolyta since I am obsessed with the idea that she was a prisoner in chains during the opening act of Midsummer Night's Dream. It seems lots of other researchers agree with me, so I'm not off base with that. But still, sewing an entire costume wasn't really something I wanted to deal with. But then last week I got my taxes done and found out I owe about as much as my entire yearly salary the year I got divorced. And then the layoffs hit my company - and they haven't hit me yet, but they've hit just about everyone around me. Like seriously, just about everyone but me. So maybe I should work for that scholarship. So I went to Beverly's Fabrics Sunday morning, and came home with this. I found what I wanted for Queen Hippolyta, then found a beautiful fabric that would be great for a fairy queen (Titania) so I figured maybe, since some reserchers believe the characters were played by the same actor and may even be dream images of each other, maybe it would be good to make a costume for each, using the same design but with different materials. So Buffy is my model and she got all pinned up in a silvery toga last night. Today I sewed up the toga without too much trouble. Now we're having some design problems with the gold ribbon I wanted to put on, but we'll figure something out. I did attach the gold chain belt, and the ends will hang down with gold bracelets attached - you see, Queen Hippolyta is Queen of the Amazons, and she's about to marry Theseus to be Queen of Athens, but she's not there of her own free will. So, her royal status gives her the beautiful dress, but she still needs to be chained and cuffed. Or there may be some killin's all up in the Theseus hizzouse. Right? You would give me a $1500 scholarship for that costume (plus one for Titania), right? Well, we have more pinning and measuring and designing to do now. I will get back to you with pictures of the finished projects. The dresses are due April 2, and I know the scholarship ceremony is on... May 2? So I should find out pretty quickly who won. I'm crossing my fingers. |
